After Drake brought #YOLO into the world (and into the pages of The New York Times), residents of Yolo County, California, suddenly found themselves in an awkward position. What had been an Indian name for a "place abounding in rushes" was suddenly a pop culture phenomenon.
One element of Yolo County that seems to have weathered the trend with minimal impact? The Yolobus.
Yolobus Executive Director Terry Bassett says he's only partly aware of the two-year-old catchphrase, which still graces the Twitter feeds of American tweens with regularity, and was a runner-up to GIF in the Oxford English Dictionary's 2012 Word of the Year contest.
I asked Bassett if he'd thought about mining the coincidence for promotional value. After all, "taking a ride on the YOLObus" sounds like a pretty obvious evolution of the four-letter acronym. It's like the struggle bus, only the opposite.
He said he'd keep that in mind.
