Indiana Drivers Paid $4.8 Million in NYC Parking Tickets Last Year

Just 2.6 percent of the U.S. population lives in the 470 square miles that make up New York City. But it turns out that New York City parking tickets are a decidedly national affair. Statistician Ben Wellington mines open data to gift the Internet with visualizations of NYC's biggest issues at the Tumblr I Quant NYC, and his newest map takes a crack at parking tickets issued by the city between August 2013 and June 2014. At the heart of his investigation is a simple question: "Do people driving from all 50 states get parking tickets in New York?" The answer: 50 times, yes.
