No cash to ride the Muni? No problem! Just dig into the pocket where you keep your magic beans, pop those babies in the coin slot, and you’re on your way.
Or so you might believe from surreal but official-looking notices popping up on San Francisco’s public transit. “Fares may be paid by cash, Clipper, or magic beans,” reads one. “This is a gluten-free bus,” announces another. (Enthuses a man on Instagram, purportedly in a stereotypical San Franciscan tone: “I’ve been waiting all my life to be able to ride a bus without guilt.”)
Just who’s pranking the system is unknown. But Muni has confirmed beans are now valid currency. “I think if you can get your hands on certified magic beans, you should be able to have a seat on Muni,” jokes spokesman Paul Rose. “I don’t think they’ll work on the Clipper machines though.”
