A Smart Alternative to the Standing Desk

Slump no more.

Zami

By now you've heard the mountain of evidence against sitting, and maybe you're even ready to make the switch to a healthier setup. But the prospect of standing, surfing, balancing, or walking in place at your desk for hours at a time is still a little daunting. Well, you're in luck: there's now a "smart" stool to ease the transition.

Zami

The Dutch-designed Zami stool is ergonomically built to improve your posture by supporting the "optimal curve" of your spine. Created by designer Ruud-Jan Kokke and orthopedic surgeon Piet Van Loon, the double convex silhouette is functional and sleek. Unlike a treadmill desk or exercise ball, it won't stick out like a sore thumb in your office. (And you won't have to worry about rolling off it in the middle of a meeting.)

The stool comes in two versions: "Essential," in your choice of wood or aluminum; and "Smart," equipped with pressure sensors that communicate with a mobile app. The "Smart" stool sends real-time feedback to the app, which lets you know how much you're sitting (and fidgeting), how many calories you're burning, and how you can correct your posture. It also provides tips for seated core exercises to fill all those wasted FitBit hours you spend at work. Basically, the stool is an all-in-one life coach, personal trainer, and nagging mom—so there's no excuse for slouching.

Stool, $229-$379 at Indiegogo.
