When Fresno Was 'A City Reborn'

A 1968 film by Victor Gruen and Associates celebrates a revitalized downtown and a pedestrian mall that won’t be around much longer.

As it threatened to succumb to the growing suburbs surrounding it, downtown Fresno needed a jolt heading into the 1960s. City leaders asked Victor Gruen and Associates to fix their car-clogged streets and emptying storefronts. The pioneers of shopping-center and pedestrian-mall design of the time “solved” the problem—and gave Fresnans the gift of a congratulatory film.
