The New York Eastern Correctional Facility Debate Team Trounces Harvard

The group, part of a rigorous “college experience” program for inmates, has also beaten West Point.

Two unlikely opposing teams sat on the stage for a recent debate competition. On one end were students from Harvard University. On the other, three inmates from New York’s maximum-security Eastern Correctional Facility.

In fast-paced debate over the academic future of undocumented students, you might think the Ivy League students would have the upper hand. But within an hour, the debate judge declared Carlos Polanco, Carl Snyder, and Dyjuan Tatro—three inmates serving time for violent crimes—the winners.
