Protesters stopped Ukraine's richest man from "spitting on the soul" of the city by demolishing buildings in a historic site.
Apparently, money can't buy love.
That's a lesson Ukraine's richest man Rinat Akhmetov learned the hard way. Akhmetov planned to build a glitzy business center in one of Kiev's historic tourist sites, but he scrapped the plans a large protest, organized mostly through Facebook. Opponents accused him of "spitting on the soul" of the capital.
They were too late to stop bulldozers from knocking down at least one 19th-century building. After the protest, Akhmetov vowed to restore the streets original look and feel, saying "I promise that SCM will return the original look to the destroyed facades. We will also help the town restore Andriyivsky Descent."As a financial backer of President.
