Making Ghostly Art From Detroit's Sewer Steam

Take a trip to a nightmare world full of giant pigeons and animal-headed businessmen.
Hygienic Dress League

Nothing might stop you quicker on the street than a suited man with the head of a farm animal striding out of sewer-steam cloud. And indeed, Detroit residents recently got the chance to test their tickers with this unsettling manifestation, thanks to mischievous artists known as the Hygienic Dress League.

The League is a tongue-in-cheek, registered Michigan corporation composed of local couple Steve and Dorota Coy. The duo has been working for years to inject weird life into Detroit's run-down architecture—festooning boarded-up alcoves with gigantic birds and gun-toting fashionistas, and placing a huge, glowing "NO VACANCY" sign atop an abandoned hotel. They hope their urban touch-ups will ultimately benefit the troubled city, as they told the Metro Times in 2011: "We want to bring attention to the buildings in that maybe someone will see the possibility of the space."
