How Was Your Weekend? The Answer Depends on Your Workplace

Your social experience during the workweek can almost fully explain your emotional state over the weekend, a new study finds.

From a 9-to-5 worker’s perspective, one of the most compelling arguments for the four-day workweek is the mental-health boost. By Sunday night, we’ve only just begun to shake off the stress of the workweek. With one more day off, maybe we could truly savor the pleasures of the weekend.

But as a new working paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research suggests, if we’re looking for happiness on the weekend, we might start by trying to improve relationships in our workplace. A positive social atmosphere with our supervisors and colleagues can make the emotional jump between weekends and weekdays a lot less drastic.
