San Francisco’s first Asian American mayor died Tuesday, leaving behind a broad legacy of liberalism—and fraught compromises with the tech industry—on housing, education, the environment, and immigration.

San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee, the first Asian American to lead the city, died on Tuesday. He was 65.

Former Mayor Willie Brown, whose push catapulted Lee to the Mayor’s office in 2011, told the San Francisco Examiner that Lee suffered a cardiac arrest at a grocery store Monday night, and was pronounced dead at the hospital a few hours later.
