But pranksters, not Apple, are behind the hilariously ugly selfies.
I like to imagine Tim Cook steamed into work this week ready to fire the idiot who put a naked man, covered entirely in shaving cream, on the new iPhone ad.
But sadly, that marketing dunce (or genius?) does not exist. Rather, the odd Apple promotions that appeared in San Francisco this week were the work of pranksters, who wanted to lampoon the company's "Shot on iPhone 6" campaign.
A brief recap: Apple is trying to hype its camera technology by crowdsourcing user photos from around the world and sticking them on billboards. The shots include gorgeous scenes of nature, but two locals identified as Pablo Rochat and Fabio Benedetto decided they weren't exactly reflective of reality: We live, after all, in the golden age of drunken selfies and d— pics.
So they rolled out their own "ads" using random Internet images. San Francisco's The Bold Italic reached out to them to get this explanation:
"All the photos Apple selected for the campaign are beautiful. Our thought was that people don't always take pretty pictures on their phones, so we thought it would be funny to show the other, non-beautiful, photos people take. We both work as creatives in advertising and love to make fun of our industry whenever we can. We put them up this past Sunday, mostly around the Mission, Castro, and Downtown area where all the iPhone 6 ads are."
By Thursday, most if not all of the fake ads had disappeared, reports Refinery29. But we'll always have the beautiful memories:
