Fulfilling your fantasies of instant gratification.
On-demand drone delivery is still a ways off, but starting today Amazon Prime members can console themselves with free same-day delivery on more than 1 million products. The service applies to purchases over $35—below that, you’ll have to pay the usual $5.99 for expedited shipping—and it’s included in your $99/year Prime membership. Just order by 12 p.m. and get your stuff delivered by 9 p.m., any day of the week.
Amazon is rolling out same-day delivery in 14 metropolitan areas in the U.S.: Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco Bay, Seattle, Tampa Bay, and Washington, D.C. Expansion, though, is inevitable. With the launch of in-home gadgets Dash and Echo, along with the one-hour Prime Now delivery service, Amazon is angling to become the 24/7 answer to your every whim. (Such as a fiendish desire for a jar of peanut butter right this minute.)
How do orders get to you so fast? The Los Angeles Times reports that Amazon will deploy a fleet of trucks for same-day delivery, and according to GeekWire, couriers are already using taxis and, at least in New York, riding the subway to speed up the process. Whatever the case may be, the company is making it incrementally easier to never leave home again.
