A Bookshelf That Doubles in Size

This expandable bookshelf can hold all of your stuff—or just a little.

Drop-leaf tables can expand to accommodate a crowd. But when your book collection gets a little out of hand, you’re forced to pony up for another shelf or start stacking them wherever you can find some real estate. Now, there’s a bookshelf that takes a cue from those dining tables and can expand to fit a ballooning personal library.

Designed by the Japanese firm Nendo, the grid-style bookshelf doubles in width, expanding from a slim two feet to more than four feet. The sections tuck neatly inside one another when not in use.
